Not only will you avoid checked bag fees, but you'll also avoid the risk of your bags being delayed or going missing. Invest in a decent carry-on and travel light. As a side note, if you fly Southwest, they still allow two carry-ons for free, so saving money isn’t an incentive with them. However, it can still be convenient to only have a carry-on vs. lugging around large suitcases for your vacation.
3. Sign up for price alerts
Travelocity, Hopper and Airefarewatchdog all allow you to create routes that you're interested in and will notify you when the flight prices drop below a certain point for those routes based on the criteria you provide. It's a great way to nab a good price for the ticket to your dream destination.
