Protecting You and Your Family from Fraud and Charity Scams

Charity Scams

It's in our nature to want to help those less fortunate or in need.

Unfortunately, many attempt to take advantage and prey on our generosity. When being approached for charitable donations, be sure to do your homework and research the charity to confirm it's legit.

Below are eight signs that might indicate the "charity" soliciting you is not on the up-and-up.

  1. If the charity won't give you information about who they are, their mission, and how the donation will be applied.
  2. They have a name similar to another well-known charity.
  3. They can't provide proof of a tax-deductible contribution.
  4. They ask you to wire money or donate in cash.
  5. They attempt to pressure you into a donation.
  6. They offer a sweepstake winning for your contribution.
  7. They thank you for a contribution you didn't make or can't remember making.
  8. They are eager to receive the donation immediately and are willing to go above and beyond to get it.

To protect yourself against charity fraud, take the following steps:

  1. Do the research and find out what the charity is and how your funds will be used.
  2. Keep records of your contributions.
  3. Check the IRS website to determine if your donation will be tax-deductible.
  4. Contact the charity being represented to confirm the solicitation is legit and that the charity knows about it.
  5. Don't send cash contributions or wire money.

Keep giving! Just be sure you know where your contributions are going. For more information and tips to protect you and your family from charity fraud, visit the Charity Scams section of the FTC's website.
