Credit Unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives. While they compete with other financial institutions, they differ in three distinctive ways:

Members Own Credit Unions

Each member, regardless of how many accounts he/she owns – or how much money they have on deposit - is guaranteed one share of the credit union. These members also elect a Board of Directors; these volunteers govern the operations of the CU.

They Are Not-for-Profit Organizations

Although the Credit Union must turn a profit to continue to offer member service, earnings are returned to members in the form of dividends and/or invested in other financial products and services.

They Are Financial Cooperatives

Money that is saved by members is pooled together to provide loans and services to the entire membership.
